Copolyester

Copolyester hot melt adhesive are achieving good adhesion values  and excellent washing-resistance specifically on PES- and classical blends such as polyester / cotton fabrics. In contrast, the resistance to dry cleaning is limited.

The amount of terephthalic acid component in the polyester molecule is crucial for the level of crystallinity, the recrystallization speed and the washing- resistance of the hot melt adhesive.  The higher this percentage, the higher are the properties mentioned, and the higher the Melting temperature and the resulting bonding temperatures.

An advantage of the polyester adhesive is that it is not steam activatable.
This therefore results in subsequent treatment with a steam iron or a steam dummy without problems. The dry-cleaning resistance may be positively influenced by paste additives.

Applications

Besides the use in the garment industry, PES-melt adhesives are used in shoe manufacturing to connect difficult substrates such as oily leather or plasticized PVC.


Polyester melt adhesives are used in the automotive industry due to their good adhesion properties of the composite manufacturing (eg. Foam / textile substrate).
They also benefit from its low fogging values. In conjunction with the vehicle-interior polyester fibers allows due to the purity base a high recyclability.




Economic aspects

Today PES hot melt adhesives are produced mainly in the Far East.
Although prices are already significantly below those of high-quality copolyamides. To meet the price competitiveness and required high quality of European clothing manufacturers in their markets, blends of copolyamides (still mostly from European productions) and imported copolyester are applied.
Paste-Dot manufacturers benefit from special paste formulations to obtain through blends these high quality properties and maintain their coating quality.
